Effects of Nifedipine on Tardive Dyskinesia

Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the therapeutic effects of a calcium channel blocker on tardive dyskinesia. The subjects consisted of 16 psychiatric patients with tardive dyskinesia. Under the double-blind conditions, they were treated
with
either nifedipine or placebo for a period of 8 weeks. They were assessed by Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale(AIMS) before and after 1,2,4,6, and 8 weeks of treatment.
A statistically significant improvement of total AIMS scores on item 1-7 was not seen with both groups after all weeks of treatrment. This result suggested that nifedipine, a calcium channel blocker had no therapeutic effects on tardive
dyskinesia.
Thus
we discussed this result in comparison with the results of the previous reports that statistically significant effects of calcium channel blockers on tardive dyskinesia were demonstrated.
